International Mother Language Day Celebrations 2010

Neath Port Talbot Tigers organised an International Mother Language Day event, hosted by Dr Hywel Francis MP. The event showcased a diverse language that exists within Neath Port Talbot through recitations of poetry and stage performances. This unique event took place on Tuesday 30th March at the Princes of Royal Theatre, Port Talbot which was live broadcasted on Afan Fm.

The poets recited from different backgrounds including Chinese, Bengali, Welsh, Indian, Filipino, Urdu, French, Russian, English, Pushdu and sign language.

The performers showcased their talent including Chinese vocal song, Afan College’s sign language, and Filipino vocal song, Welsh song by Councillor Doreen Jones, Shakespearean Monologue, Indian dance and fantasy Brazilian Capoeira.

Guest speakers included Principal of Neath Port Talbot College Mark Dacey, Superintendent Joe Ruddy Police Commander for Neath Port Talbot and Councillor John Rogers.

Chairman Ziaur Rahman said:

“I am grateful to the poets who have given their time to write and share their poems, to the performers for entertaining us with their vibrancy and energy.”

This celebration marks the final event that Neath Port Talbot Tigers have put together with the help of Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council and the Welsh Assembly Government Community Cohesion Fund.
